Abarth-tuned Fiat 500X to deliver 200 hp?

Abarth-tuned Fiat 500X to deliver 200 hp?

Fiat’s Abarth division is reportedly moving forward with its rumored 500X tuning project

The company has confirmed that the 500X provides a suitable platform for a new performance model, sold alongside the Abarth-tuned Fiat 500 and 124.

“We are thinking about an all-new addition to the line-up,” Fiat Chrysler Automobiles COO Alfredo Altavilla told AutoExpress. “The 500X is one of the options being considered.”

Previous reports suggest the 500X will be outfitted with a detuned version of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s four-cylinder engine, also shared with the 124 Abarth. Power output is expected to be dropped from 237 horsepower to around 200 ponies.

The uprated crossover would be positioned against the Nissan Juke Nismo RS and MINI Countryman John Cooper Works. The 500X Abarth would need to top 215 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque to beat the existing rivals in terms of power alone.

Aside from the engine revisions, Abarth designers will also likely give the 500X a lower ride height and a more aggressive body styling. Larger wheels, dual exhaust outlets and a sportier interior are also expected.

“If the 500X becomes the addition to the Abarth line-up, it will be everything but a family version,” Altavilla added.

If the initiative receives a final green-light, it could headed to the market as early as next year.
